It is a global goal to have 30% of land and 30% of water (and therefore 30% of wildlife) protected by 2030. Today only 15% of land, 15% of freshwater, and 7% of our ocean is protected.
Why It’s Important?
The natural world provides critical resources to sustain all life on earth including human life – air we breathe, water we drink, food we eat, and the services that ecosystems provide in counteracting the damaging impacts of climate change. Biodiversity is being lost at an alarming rate and it effects our health and well-being. The population size of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles have seen an average drop of 68% since 1970. And insect losses and plant extinctions is twice as many as mammals, birds and amphibians combined which leads to effects on tiny pollinators all the way up to our food supply.
What is Baird Creek Preservation Foundation Doing to Help?
We are running a local awareness initiative in the month of April 2022 to help educate and call to action our community to do what we can in Northeast WI. Our daily actions focus on reversing degraded natural habitats, protecting ecosystems and vulnerable plant communities from climate impacts, planting trees and native seeds to add to the storage and reduction of carbon emissions, protecting and restoring wetlands to slow flooding and erosion, and purchasing land to add to our greenspaces because these areas capture storm water, abate pollution and moderate the impacts of heat. And more green means better mental and physical health.
What Can YOU Do?
Nature needs more from us! An increase in amount of protected areas, increase in restoration and conservation planning, sustainable production, sustainable consumption.
So please purchase items to help us spread the word about 30x30!
And donate to help us restore and purchase additional greenspace for Baird Creek and our community!
