Spring Family Classes – Spring 2026

The Baird Creek Preservation Foundation is excited to offer experiences for the entire family this spring! These classes will cover a different topic each week and are designed to meet the Wisconsin State Science Standards. This is geared toward families with children, ages 5 and older.

These classes spend most of their time outdoors, exploring and focusing on the topic of the day. Class begins indoors, and then everyone will have a chance to use the restroom and get ready to go outside, so your family does not have to be fully dressed for the outdoors when they arrive.

Parents/Caregivers are required to stay for class. There are no refunds for cancellations or absences from class. Refunds will only be issued for programs cancelled by Baird Creek Preservation Foundation due to low registration or weather conditions that will impede the safety of students and our staff.

Spring 2026 Class Topics

April 15 – Feathers & Beaks

Why do birds have so many different kinds of beaks and feathers? In this class, families will explore how these special adaptations help birds survive. Through hands-on activities and observation, we’ll discover how different beak shapes help birds eat different foods and how feathers keep birds warm, dry, and ready to fly. Slow-paced hike ~1 mile to observe birds

April 22 – Ecosystems Hike

What makes a forest, prairie, wetland, or creek an ecosystem? Families will learn how plants, animals, water, and soil all work together to create a balanced natural community. Through games and outdoor exploration, we’ll investigate the connections between living and nonliving things in the environment. Slow-paced hike ~1 mile, stopping at different ecosystems to explore

April 29 – Insects

Insects are everywhere! In this class, families will learn what makes an insect an insect and explore the incredible diversity of these tiny creatures. We’ll search for insects outdoors, observe their unique body parts, and learn why they are so important to healthy ecosystems. Short hike through the forest and prairie, searching for insects in plants, under logs, etc. ~.5 miles

May 6 – Spring Plants

Spring is a time of new growth! Families will explore the plants that begin to emerge in the spring and learn how they grow, reproduce, and support wildlife. We’ll take a closer look at leaves, flowers, and seeds while discovering the role plants play in the ecosystem. Slow-paced hike ~1 mile to look for spring plants

May 13 – Amphibians

Frogs, toads, and salamanders live fascinating double lives in water and on land. In this class, families will learn about the unique life cycles and adaptations of amphibians. We’ll explore the pond and discover why these animals are important indicators of a healthy environment. Hike to and from the pond with some uphill, ~ 1 mile total

May 20 – Creek Critters

What lives beneath the surface of a creek? Families will get hands-on experience as we search for aquatic insects, known as macroinvertebrates, and other small creatures living in the water. By observing these “creek critters,” we’ll learn how they help scientists understand water quality and the health of a stream ecosystem.
