History of Baird Creek

Historic Baird Creek Greenway

The Baird Creek Greenway is one of Green Bay’s most important natural spaces,
preserved through decades of community dedication, conservation efforts, and environmental stewardship.

In 1997, concerned community members rallied to protect 34–40 acres of pristine forest
in the Baird Creek Watershed that was at risk of development. This effort led to the
creation of the Baird Creek Preservation Foundation, an organization dedicated to
preserving and restoring the watershed while providing education, recreation, and
environmental opportunities for future generations.

Today, Baird Creek continues to grow through land preservation, habitat restoration,
trail development, environmental education programs, and community partnerships.

Our Story Through the Years

1997 – Community Rallies to Save Baird Creek

Local conservationists, led by people such as Paul Hartman, Charles Frisk, and other community members, worked to
protect forested land from development, leading to the formation of the Baird Creek
Preservation Foundation.

2000 – Nonprofit Organization Established

Baird Creek Preservation Foundation became a formal nonprofit organization focused on
land acquisition, restoration, trail development, and environmental education in the watershed.

2000s–2010s – Greenway Expansion

The organization expanded protected land, improved trails, removed invasive species,
restored habitat, and built strong partnerships with volunteers, schools, and community groups.

2021 – Paul Hartman Prairie & Gazebo

A 20-acre restored prairie and gazebo were completed to honor founder Paul Hartman
and celebrate decades of conservation and environmental leadership.

Today – Growing the Greenway

Baird Creek continues to preserve land, improve water quality, expand trails, and
provide environmental education programs for the Green Bay community.

Honoring Paul Hartman

Paul Hartman

Paul Hartman was instrumental in protecting Baird Creek and inspiring the creation
of the Preservation Foundation.

As a UW Extension horticulturalist and environmental leader, Paul helped rally the
community to save the watershed and dedicated his career to native plants, habitat
restoration, and environmental education throughout Northeast Wisconsin.

His vision and leadership continue to guide the mission of Baird Creek today.
